Strawberry Place, Newcastle
Client: Hanro
The site for the Strawberry Place development is situated in Newcastle city centre, approximately 1.25km north of the River Tyne. Immediately to the north west of the site is St. James Park football stadium, which dominates the surrounding landscape.
When Robinson Landscape Design was invited to work on the development it was clear from the preliminary layouts and the exigencies of the site constraints that new landscaping would play a vital role in creating the appropriate setting for the proposed development. The design of the public realm will be bold and has the potential to create a place with character, identity and distinction.
The position of Strawberry Place within the pattern of routes through and around the city makes it a space that will incur heavy usage, particularly on match days at the adjacent football ground. The development concept at Strawberry Place called for a very high quality public open space of a robust design. It will be an extensive hard landscape draped over a sweeping curve of levels, with terraced steps projecting out from the building façade.
