Benedict Building, Sunderland
Client: Vico Properties

It was clear from the preliminary architectural layouts and the site context that new landscaping would play a vital role in creating the appropriate setting for this development. The design concept for the landscape cartilage – a series of overlapping “petals” of hard landscape space aligned on an axis taken from the alignment of the Civic Centre – is bold and simple and has the potential to create a distinctive edge to the green space that lies between the site and the Civic Centre.
The landscape strategy proposes a significant new courtyard between the sheltered accommodations and the private accommodation. Some car parking is proposed, but both blocks will have curtilages of private space that will be planted. Trees will also be introduced to the courtyard, thereby framing east/west views into the site and beyond.
