RLD acted as landscape architect for the successful Kajima bid to design and build the new Central Library. This has required the re-design of Princess Square and the public realm to the curtilage of the library on John Dobson Street and New Bridge Street. Our design is a contemporary reinterpretation of the main space in which we introduce variety, use and delight to a space that is currently tired and abused.
A new PFI library reconfigured to include access on two levels, will be rebuilt on the same site. Its location on the edge of three different and dynamic parts of Newcastle – the universities, the retail city core, and the cultural centres – all within relatively easy pedestrian access - is a significant factor providing a potential catchment population to attract more library users. Using the city council’s aspiration for a ‘vibrant, inclusive, safe, sustainable’ and most significantly ‘a modern European City’ as a benchmark, Robinson Landscape Design successfully convinced client and stakeholders that to achieve their aim of more library users, they would need to adopt fresh thinking and new ways of working. Higher expectations and a more ambitious design were the outcome.
