Portland Road, Newcastle upon Tyne

The brief for Portland Road was significant; not only to improve an existing city centre brownfield site but also to assist the wider regeneration of the area, in particular to provide a new pedestrian gateway to the Ouse Burn basin.  The public realm proposed will provide access across a site where none previously existed, adding to leisure and cultural uses enjoyed by both community and visitors.  Defined by distinctive new buildings the streetscape of Portland Road has been designed within a framework of site-specific objectives.  The scheme presents three geographically distinct character areas:
