Concept: Robinson Landscape Design

The space was originally intended to be a simple pocket-park; part of the series provided around Newcastle. However Newcastle City Council proposed the idea that a Bobby Robson Memorial be incorporated as a second stage and so the design has been adapted. The concept is based on the orientation of views between Chinatown Gate and St James’ Park. We wanted to make the most of these views whilst providing a robust and simple seating solution within an attractive green-space.

Our final design incorporates four sandstone walls outlining three grass slopes that lead the eye up to a curved path, which will become the location of the Bobby Robson memorial sculptures. Planting and trees will be designed in conjunction with Newcastle City Council and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation but will include trees placed around the sculptures.

The design provides a basis for the Bobby Robson Garden and creates a small usable paved area for small events and a green landscape setting for the memorial and general recreation. The billboard is expected to be removed at a later stage by Newcastle City Council, suring the second stage of the project.

The Memorial:

Newcastle City Council, in conjunction with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation will be implementing the memorial sculptures in 2011. The full details can be obtained from Newcastle City Council.
