Sunniside Gardens

Client: Sunniside Partnership/City of Sunderland
Capital Budget: £2.0m

A flagship project and focus for urban renewal in the Sunniside district of Sunderland City, the practice won this commission following an international competition.  Working with a number of stakeholder organisations including Sunderland City, The Sunniside Partnership, Sunderland Arc and One North East, the practice has designed a vibrant and contemporary urban space with a number of distinct character areas.  Working for Sunniside Partnership, RLD was responsible for design development from outline design to production information and supervision of the construction of the scheme.

Sunniside Gardens is a large scale public realm project in the Sunniside District of Sunderland.  The site was one with a strong historical context as a piece of Georgian town planning and it lays within a conservation area with complex levels, traffic and tree patterns.  The Gardens (and the wider area) had once been a prosperous business area, but had fallen into a prolonged decline.  Sunniside Partnership and Sunderland City Council were looking for a central flagship space for the district’s wider regeneration programme, while also facilitating positive changes in building use.  RLD’s design has created a timeless, contemporary place that expressed the rhythms, scale and grain of the surrounding streets.

The Gardens were awarded a High Commended by The Landscape Institute in its 2007 national awards; the Northern RICS 2008 Renaissance Award for Regeneration; commended in the RTPI Regional Awards Scheme 2008; and a commendation in the Hadrian Awards 2009.

Robinson Landscape Design demonstrated throughout the project lifecycle a deep understanding of the space and how to effectively transform it into an exciting usable high quality space.  RLD’s design solution was innovative and incorporated a number of complex elements, including water feature, artwork and specialist lighting.  RLD rose up to the challenge to provide the client and, more importantly the end users, the local population of Sunderland, a usable high quality spece which is cherished and adored”. Stuart Ainsley, Project Manager, Sunniside Partnership
