West Park

The West Park development on the western edge of Darlington is a successful housing project with a sophisticated landscape concept that is integral to the site’s identity and value.

A section of land adjacent to the West Park village centre contains a major water pipe that crosses from West to East. The constraints on use, preclude the corridor being developed, but allow the land to be part of the green space pattern of the site providing landfrom changes that are less than plus or minus 300mm.

With limited scope for a 3D design, our proposal was to create a strong 2D design, in which a central land canal is defined by a braid of curving plateau; and each of which is within the limit of plus or minus 300mm.

The idea came from the ground plan pattern formed by the action of water and wind on wet sand beaches by the sea and was developed to create complex patterns as paths interweave with ground patterns of wild flower seeding.

Contrasts in mowing regimes, ensure a design form on the proposed space.
